Consequently, the initiative aims to curb excessive Android app memory consumption across smartphones ranging from 4GB to 16GB RAM. These limits first appeared in Android 17 on Pixel devices, where base configurations on recent models launched with less physical memory than predecessors.

Furthermore, the restrictions apply to multiple runtime areas. Google is setting precise technical performance thresholds for dynamic memory allocation and bitmap usage to keep software responsive.

Enforcement Timelines and Penalties

App creators must comply with the new rules by February 2027. If an application consistently exceeds memory thresholds, the operating system will slow it down or terminate its background process automatically.

Moreover, failure to adapt could hurt discovery on the Play Store. Google stated that non-compliant titles may face reduced store visibility and restricted distribution capabilities. In addition, all apps and software on the store must integrate the Zero Tap Sign-In protocol by April 2027 to ease user transitions between devices.
