Gemini CLI launched in 2025 with over 100,000 GitHub stars and 6,000 merged pull requests from hundreds of contributors. Google product managers Dmitry Lyalin and Taylor Mullen stated that user needs have shifted toward multi-agent collaboration. The company decided to focus its efforts on a single product: Google Antigravity, which includes a server-side harness and a new command-line interface called Antigravity CLI.
Key features carried over
Antigravity CLI retains the most important features from Gemini CLI: Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents, and Extensions, now available as Antigravity plugins. Users can still get quick answers, scaffold coding projects, and provision cloud infrastructure. The new CLI is built in Go for faster execution, supports asynchronous workflows that orchestrate multiple agents, and shares a unified architecture with Antigravity 2.0.
Timeline for consumers
Antigravity CLI is available as of May 19, 2026. On June 18, 2026, Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions will stop serving requests for Google AI Pro and Ultra, as well as free users with Gemini Code Assist for individuals. Gemini Code Assist for GitHub will also stop new installations on that date, with requests ceasing in the following weeks.
Enterprise customers unaffected
Organizations using Gemini CLI or IDE extensions via Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise licenses, or via Google Cloud, will see no change in access. Google will continue supporting Gemini CLI with updates. Enterprise customers can also use Antigravity CLI with their Google Cloud projects.
