Apple Intel chip deal has been reached as Apple and Intel reached a preliminary agreement for Intel to manufacture some of the chips that power iPhones, iPads, and other devices. The Wall Street Journal reported the two companies engaged in intensive talks for more than a year before reaching the agreement over the past few months.
The agreement would reduce Apple’s reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which currently produces nearly all the custom silicon found in iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. TSMC remains Apple’s primary chip manufacturer. Diversifying its supply chain across multiple foundries would give Apple greater flexibility in production and sourcing.
Apple Explores Multiple Chip Manufacturing Partners
Apple is not limiting its options to Intel. Bloomberg reported last week that Apple held early-stage discussions with Samsung regarding chip manufacturing. Apple executives visited Samsung’s plant under development in Texas, which will produce advanced chips. These parallel negotiations suggest Apple is building redundancy into its supply chain strategy.
Intel’s Foundry Business Expansion
Under CEO Lip Bu Tan’s leadership, Intel is working to revitalize its chip manufacturing operations and establish itself as a serious player in the foundry industry. Landing Apple as a customer would provide significant credibility and revenue for the company’s foundry business segment. In April, Intel revealed plans to join Elon Musk’s Terafab project, which aims to build processors for orbital data centers and humanoid robots.
Strategic Implications for the Semiconductor Industry
The preliminary agreement between Apple and Intel signals a broader shift in semiconductor manufacturing. Apple’s move to diversify suppliers reduces concentration risk and strengthens negotiating positions with existing partners.
