Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips launched on March 3, 2026, built on a new Fusion Architecture that connects two dies into a single system on a chip (SoC). The chips power the new MacBook Pro, which opens for pre-order on March 4, with general availability beginning Wednesday, March 11.

The Fusion Architecture combines two third-generation 3-nanometer dies using advanced packaging with high bandwidth and low latency. Each SoC integrates a CPU, scalable GPU, Media Engine, unified memory controller, Neural Engine, and Thunderbolt 5 capabilities into a single unit.

M5 Pro and M5 Max CPU Architecture

Both chips feature an 18-core CPU comprising 6 super cores and 12 performance cores. Apple said the super cores deliver the fastest single-threaded performance of any CPU core, driven by increased front-end bandwidth, a new cache hierarchy, and enhanced branch prediction. The combined CPU delivers up to 30 percent higher performance for pro workloads compared to the previous generation, and up to 2.5x higher multithreaded performance than M1 Pro and M1 Max.

GPU Performance and AI Compute

The GPU scales up to 40 cores on M5 Max, with a Neural Accelerator embedded in each GPU core. Apple said M5 Pro and M5 Max deliver over 4x the peak GPU compute for artificial intelligence tasks compared to M4 Pro and M4 Max. Graphics performance increases by up to 20 percent over the previous generation, while apps using ray tracing see a graphics uplift of up to 35 percent on M5 Pro and up to 30 percent on M5 Max.

M5 Pro Specifications

M5 Pro pairs an up-to-18-core CPU with an up-to-20-core GPU. It supports up to 64GB of unified memory with bandwidth up to 307GB/s. The chip delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to M4 Pro, and over 6x compared to M1 Pro. An enhanced shader core with second-generation dynamic caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading contributes to graphics performance that is up to 20 percent higher than M4 Pro and 2.2x higher than M1 Pro.

M5 Max Specifications

M5 Max pairs the same 18-core CPU with an up-to-40-core GPU — double the GPU cores of M5 Pro. It supports up to 128GB of unified memory with bandwidth up to 614GB/s. Apple said this bandwidth supports complex scenes, massive datasets, and higher token generation for large language models (LLMs). M5 Max delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute for AI compared to M4 Max, and over 6x compared to M1 Max. Graphics performance is up to 20 percent higher than M4 Max and 2.2x higher than M1 Max.

Additional On-Chip Technologies

Both chips include a 16-core Neural Engine with higher bandwidth memory connectivity to accelerate on-device AI features and Apple Intelligence. The chips also support Memory Integrity Enforcement, described by Apple as an always-on memory safety protection that does not affect device performance. Each chip includes Thunderbolt 5 ports backed by custom-designed controllers built directly onto the chip. Apple’s latest Media Engine supports hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, AV1 decode, and ProRes encode and decode.

Apple noted that the power-efficient design of M5 Pro and M5 Max supports the company’s Apple 2030 goal to achieve carbon neutrality across its entire footprint by the end of the decade. The chips help MacBook Pro meet Apple’s energy efficiency standards and reduce total energy consumption over the product’s lifetime. Testing was conducted by Apple in February 2026 using preproduction MacBook Pro systems.
