Apple has reversed its decision to change the domain name for its Hide My Email service following feedback from users and privacy advocates. The company confirmed that addresses created through the privacy tool will continue to use the standard icloud.com domain rather than moving to a separate domain.
How Hide My Email Protects User Privacy
Subscribers to iCloud+ use the feature to generate unique, random email addresses that forward incoming messages to their personal inboxes. Because these aliases share the icloud.com domain with standard accounts, online platforms cannot easily detect or block them during registration without rejecting legitimate iCloud users as well. In addition, the system helps protect user identities from tracking across commercial databases.
Earlier this summer, Apple had announced plans to shift these addresses to private.icloud.com. Users raised concerns that a distinct domain would allow websites to identify masked accounts easily, potentially blocking sign-ups from people attempting to maintain their digital privacy. The decision to abandon that migration came after internal discussions and public criticism, according to reporting by TechCrunch.
The Proposed Domain Switch
The initial plan was introduced in mid-June as part of an update to Apple’s authentication services. Under that roadmap, both Hide My Email and the Sign in with Apple system were slated to share the private.icloud.com destination. While the change for alias generation is now cancelled, authentication workflows will still proceed with separate updates on compatible mobile devices.
Developer Guidelines for Sign in with Apple
Apple updated its developer documentation to clarify the revised policy. The company stated that new Sign in with Apple addresses will move from privaterelay.appleid.com to private.icloud.com later this year, while existing relay addresses will remain functional. Developers must update their email validation systems and account filters to accept the new format alongside the legacy domain.
