The BeiDou navigation upgrade programme will affect all 50 satellites in China’s constellation, the China Satellite Navigation Office (CSNO) stated on March 13, 2026. The work will be conducted entirely in-orbit, making it one of the largest remote software update operations in satellite history.

The CSNO said the upgrade focuses on optimising and adjusting the operational status of individual satellites. Furthermore, the office stated efforts would be made to strengthen joint debugging and testing of the satellites while they remain in orbit.

Scope of the BeiDou Navigation Upgrade

The telecommunications and navigation infrastructure spans three orbital classes. BeiDou comprises geostationary, inclined geosynchronous, and medium Earth orbit satellites. In addition, the system includes a comprehensive set of land-based ground equipment.

A third element of the system covers user equipment, including chips, modules, and antennas. The CSNO noted these components are compatible with other satellite navigation systems currently in operation.

Industrial and Economic Applications

BeiDou serves a broad range of industrial sectors across China. According to CSNO data, active applications include transport, agriculture, forestry, and aquaculture. The system also supports disaster recovery operations and critical national infrastructure.

The CSNO stated the constellation has generated “significant economic and social benefits” since entering full operational service. The upgrade programme aims to deliver measurable improvements to user experience across all these sectors.

User Experience and System Benefits

The CSNO said the in-orbit work intends to deliver direct user experience benefits. However, the office did not specify which performance metrics would improve or by how much following the upgrade cycle.

Notably, the upgrade programme aligns with China’s broader smart devices and connectivity strategy. The CSNO confirmed the system supports chips and modules compatible with competing global navigation systems, ensuring interoperability for end users.

2035 Roadmap for Spatiotemporal Intelligence

The in-orbit upgrades form part of a longer-term development roadmap. The CSNO stated the BeiDou navigation upgrade keeps the constellation on track to deliver a more integrated and intelligent spatiotemporal system by 2035.

Consequently, the 2035 target positions BeiDou as a comprehensive positioning, navigation, and timing platform. The system is expected to expand its role in economy-critical sectors as the upgrade programme progresses through the coming years.
