Apple appears to have leaked its upcoming camera-equipped AirPods in a video file found within the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate update.
The system files, first spotted by MacRumors, contain a demonstration video showing the new hardware in action. This leak suggests that the company is preparing launch materials for a new variant of its popular wireless earbuds.
In the leaked video, a user wearing the earbuds holds up a book and interacts with Siri using visual information. The accompanying audio track states that “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable.” This feature allows users to ask the assistant to save items for later.
Visual Intelligence Integration
The integration of artificial intelligence with wearable hardware is a growing trend in the technology sector. The development of camera-equipped AirPods represents a shift in how users interact with digital assistants.
According to a report by TechCrunch, the new system utilizes the upgraded Siri assistant to process real-world objects. Software code within the macOS update also references a “Hair Detected” error, which warns users if their hair covers the camera lens.
This visual capability aims to provide hands-free interaction without requiring users to look at a smartphone screen. Consequently, users can find directions in unfamiliar cities or ask questions about their immediate surroundings.
Technical Specifications of the camera-equipped AirPods
Earlier reports from Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman indicate that the new smart devices will resemble the AirPods Pro 3 design. However, they will feature a longer stem to accommodate the camera components. These sensors are located in both the right and left earbuds to capture low-resolution visual data.
These camera-equipped AirPods are designed to act as sensors for Siri rather than tools for taking photos or recording video. This technical limitation helps address privacy concerns associated with wearable cameras.
Privacy Measures and LED Indicators
To ensure transparency, the hardware includes an LED indicator light that activates when the device transmits visual data to the cloud. However, the small size of the earbuds may limit the visibility of this light.
Other companies have introduced similar products, including Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses and Rokid smart glasses. Apple’s approach focuses on integrating these sensors into an existing, socially accepted accessory.
Future Outlook for Apple Wearables
The release of these earbuds is expected to coincide with upcoming operating system updates, including iOS 27, in September. This timing aligns with the rollout of Apple’s upgraded Siri assistant.
Ultimately, this hardware release could serve as an intermediate step before the company introduces its own dedicated smart glasses. By utilizing existing audio accessories, the company can test real-world visual processing on a large scale.
