The new DHL Express AI tool has launched to simplify international shipping processes through automated item identification.
This system uses computer vision built into the company’s browser-based shipping platform to assist customers with customs documentation. Customers can take a photo of the item they want to send using a smartphone or computer. The system then processes the image to generate a customs-compliant description within a few seconds.
This description is automatically inserted into the appropriate field, though users can review, edit, or override the entry before submission.
How the DHL Express AI Tool Works
The integration of DHL Express AI capabilities directly into the booking flow represents a shift from traditional manual entry.
Previously, shippers had to self-declare item contents without digital assistance, which often required precise wording and specialist customs knowledge. By automating this step, the system aims to improve data quality and reduce the risk of shipment delays.
Initial Global Launch Markets
The United Arab Emirates is among the first eight markets globally to receive this feature.
The other initial launch markets include Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, and Spain. DHL Express plans to continue rolling out the feature to additional markets throughout 2026.
“Computer vision is now live for customers in some initial markets, with the United Arab Emirates among the first to offer this feature. This will have a strong impact, as accurate item classification at the point of data entry means cleaner data across the entire shipment lifecycle.”
Mahmoud Haj Hussein, Managing Director of DHL Express UAE
Addressing Traditional Customs Challenges
According to the company, the item description field has historically been a point where the customer experience could break down due to complexity.
The new feature does not require users to have a DHL Express account, making it accessible to all shippers. This represents the first time item identification has been integrated into a live, customer-facing international express booking flow at scale.
“The item description field was not a minor inconvenience – it was a critical moment where the customer experience broke down. This AI feature is a direct response to customer feedback.”
Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions at DHL Express
