Cancer biomarker testing in global clinical trials faces a persistent challenge: inconsistent interpretation among pathologists. Discovery Life Sciences and Mindpeak said on March 24, 2026, that they have formed a partnership to address this problem directly by integrating AI-powered digital image analysis into histopathology services for immunohistochemistry (IHC) and multiplex immunofluorescence (mIF) applications.

The Core Problem: Pathologist Variability in Biomarker Interpretation

Inconsistent biomarker interpretation among pathologists contributes to variability in patient stratification. Moreover, it undermines confidence in critical go/no-go decisions during drug development. The two companies said the partnership targets this challenge by combining Mindpeak’s AI platform with Discovery’s tissue biomarker services for IHC and mIF slide analysis.

How the Partnership Works

Mindpeak’s technology functions as a risk-reduction tool for biopharmaceutical companies. Specifically, it improves interpretation consistency across pathologists through AI-assisted pathology workflows, pathologist training via Mindpeak’s peakAcademy program, and AI-guided microdissection algorithms for isolating specific tissue regions with high precision.

Discovery contributes an established clinical infrastructure to the alliance. The company’s Biomarker Academy, a peer-based pathologist training program founded in 2008, has trained more than 6,000 specialists in biomarker interpretation and scoring over the past 15 years. Furthermore, Discovery has supported more than 2,000 clinical trial programs, with 350 currently active, and has completed more than 35 IVDR-compliant studies across 16 EU countries covering 25 biomarkers over the past four years.

Cancer Biomarker Testing and AI Integration

The partnership extends Discovery’s existing artificial intelligence capabilities, which currently focus on hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining analysis for biospecimens. These include automated quality control, tumor burden measurement, and detailed tumor microenvironment characterization across multiple therapeutic areas.
