Google announced that the number of monthly Gemini active users has officially reached one billion globally.

This milestone makes the assistant the fastest-growing product in the history of the company. According to a report by Ars Technica, the application achieved this user base quicker than any of the other 13 Google services that have reached the same scale.

The metric specifically tracks individuals who actively open the mobile application or access the web interface to submit prompts. It does not include passive interactions where the technology runs in the background of other services. Meanwhile, competitor OpenAI recently reported that its ChatGPT service also surpassed the one billion monthly user mark.

Growth of Gemini active users

The rapid expansion of Gemini active users highlights the intensifying competition in the global generative artificial intelligence market.

Google previously reported 750 million monthly users in February, which grew to 950 million by late July. The final push to one billion occurred during the first week of August, according to company representatives.

User Behavior and Voice Adoption

Josh Woodward, the Google vice president overseeing the project, provided details regarding how people interact with the chatbot.

Notably, 63 percent of active users utilize voice input, with a growing segment relying entirely on voice commands. Furthermore, 20 percent of those using the live voice feature share their camera feeds or screens to obtain assistance.

Academic usage also represents a significant portion of the overall activity. Specifically, 38 percent of school-related queries submitted to the platform include file attachments. To address this demand, the company plans to release a new set of digital tools for education in the coming weeks.

Platform Distribution and Mobile Reach

Mobile platforms remain a primary driver for the expansion of Gemini active users across different operating systems.

The application comes pre-installed on most modern Android devices, which guides users toward the service. However, more than 100 million monthly active users access the assistant on iOS, where they must manually download the software from the apps store.

Infrastructure Costs and Model Development

This rapid growth has required substantial financial investment from the parent company.

Google has increased its spending on infrastructure, which has impacted its cash flow. Additionally, the development of next-generation models has faced some internal delays. The company missed its June release window for its upcoming model, though training has already commenced on its successor.
