The Huawei iFTTO solution made its public debut at MWC Barcelona 2026 on March 5, 2026, as the company presented the system designed to accelerate smart campus transformation using optical networking and artificial intelligence.
The solution builds on Huawei’s existing FTTO platform. It integrates multi-dimensional information fusion, intelligent operations and maintenance, and open IoT capabilities. Huawei said the upgrade positions campuses to evolve into fully connected, intelligent environments.
Why Campuses Need a New Network Foundation
The growing adoption of artificial intelligence applications inside campuses is driving demand for higher bandwidth and lower latency. Traditional two-layer network architectures struggle to meet these requirements. Huawei said this shift creates new operational challenges that the iFTTO solution is designed to address.
“Huawei has upgraded its FTTO solution to iFTTO, pushing campus networks beyond traditional connectivity toward multi-dimensional information fusion and IoT. This evolution establishes a unified foundation combining vision, computing, and control, paving the way for smart campus transformation and accelerating the journey toward intelligent operations.”

The Huawei iFTTO Solution: O-N.E.X.T Framework Explained
Huawei introduced the O-N.E.X.T concept to define the four capabilities of the iFTTO solution. Each letter represents a distinct technical pillar that together redefine campus network value.
- N – Network Unified by Optical: Optical networks connect directly to terminal devices, collapsing the architecture from two layers to one.
- E – Ecosystem of Open IoT: Huawei’s first industry-level Wi-Fi 7 optical IoT access point integrates NearLink and Bluetooth modules, enabling unified deployment and a shared carrier for both network communications and IoT.
- X – X-Dimensional Information Fusion: The system supports multi-dimensional data sources including vision, Wi-Fi channels, radio frequency, and 3D LiDAR, enabling diverse AI applications through multi-modal collaborative computing.
- T – Towards Autonomous Operation: Huawei said this marks the industry’s first AI agent for operations and maintenance in all-optical campuses, supporting proactive and reactive O&M with closed-loop management.
- O – Open 3-Layer Computing Power: Cloud, edge, and device synergy supports AI application deployment across sectors including smart healthcare and energy-efficient hospitality.
Sector Applications Across Education, Healthcare, and Hospitality
In education, the iFTTO solution uses fully passive optical aggregation and tri-band Wi-Fi 7 optical access points to deliver 10 Gbps per room. The system also enables coordinated control of classroom lighting and air conditioning to reduce energy consumption. AI algorithms in dormitories prioritize critical services to improve user experience.
In healthcare, 50G PON technology accelerates AI-powered pathology analysis. Optical terminal stations connect to IoT devices in patient wards to support smart nursing and patient privacy protection. For hotels, a 2D-to-3D video conversion feature provides guests with an immersive entertainment experience.
Deployment Scale and Market Reach
Huawei’s predecessor FTTO solution has served more than 15,000 campuses to date. The company said the iFTTO upgrade extends this foundation with AI-native capabilities suited to the demands of intelligent campus environments in 2026 and beyond.
The telecommunications and enterprise networking sectors are watching the iFTTO rollout closely, as optical-AI convergence becomes a key infrastructure strategy for large institutions globally.
