Hyundai Motor Group and the Exploratorium announced a long-term partnership on April 21, 2026, to establish a new experiential science museum in Seoul. The Hyundai Exploratorium science museum will be located within the Group’s Global Business Complex and is scheduled to open in 2032.
The collaboration brings together San Francisco’s Exploratorium, founded in 1969 by physicist Frank Oppenheimer, with Hyundai’s vision for nurturing future talent. Both organizations share a commitment to fostering curiosity and scientific inquiry among younger generations. The partnership reflects Hyundai’s broader strategy to invest in education and science learning initiatives across Asia.
Museum Design and Core Principles
The Hyundai Exploratorium science museum will be built on four foundational principles: Curiosity, Creativity, Community, and Collaboration. The design emphasizes hands-on, interactive learning experiences where visitors actively participate in discovery rather than passively observing exhibits.
Over several years, Hyundai Motor Group and the Exploratorium worked closely to develop the museum’s framework. The final design incorporates the Exploratorium’s inquiry-based learning methodology, Hyundai’s human-centered approach, and local Korean cultural context. Visitors will encounter questions and be empowered to find answers through direct exploration and experimentation.
The Exploratorium’s Track Record
The Exploratorium operates more than 650 interactive exhibits exploring science, art, psychology, socio-culture, and climate change. The museum pioneered the hands-on learning approach that has influenced science centers worldwide. Its creative workshop spaces bring together scientists, engineers, artists, and designers who actively collaborate to research, develop, and build exhibits.
The New York Times described the Exploratorium as “the most important science museum to have opened in the mid-20th century.” This reputation made it an ideal partner for Hyundai’s vision of creating a science education hub in Asia.
Community Platform and Regional Impact
The museum will function as a vibrant science community platform serving both local Korean residents and international visitors. Through collaboration with local Korean communities, the institution aims to spread scientific engagement culture and make science accessible to broader audiences across the region.
Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung stated that the museum will serve as “a unique hub for science education, delivering experiences that nurture individual curiosity and a spirit of inquiry for a better future.” The facility will address challenges in advanced fields including artificial intelligence and mobility solutions.
Hyundai’s Broader Vision
Hyundai Motor Company, established in 1967, operates in over 200 countries with more than 120,000 employees. The company is transforming into a Smart Mobility Solution Provider, investing in robotics, Urban Air Mobility, and zero-emission vehicle technologies. The science museum partnership aligns with this strategic direction by investing in education and talent development for future innovation sectors.
The Global Business Complex in Seoul will serve as the museum’s home, positioning it as a leading science institution in Asia. Both Hyundai and the Exploratorium are committed to establishing the facility as a premier hub for scientific learning and cultural exchange across the region.
