IBM has announced a partnership with OpenAI to deliver advanced enterprise AI solutions to corporate clients globally. According to a report by TechCrunch, this collaboration aims to bring OpenAI’s models and tools to a broader base of large companies through IBM’s global consulting division. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed by either company.

The agreement establishes a dedicated OpenAI practice within IBM Consulting. Under this initiative, IBM plans to train and certify tens of thousands of its consultants on OpenAI’s technologies over the next several months. This training program will primarily focus on retraining existing employees to use OpenAI’s Codex, API, cybersecurity tools, and consultative solution credentials.

Expanding Enterprise AI Solutions

The joint effort will focus on developing industry-specific enterprise AI solutions for sectors such as financial services, government, telecommunications, and retail. IBM and OpenAI will jointly market these new offerings to help businesses deploy technology across core operations. This move comes as competition among AI model developers shifts from building models to securing large-scale corporate deployments.

Consultant Training and Certification

To support the deployment of these enterprise AI solutions, IBM will establish a specialized group of experts. These professionals, known as “Forward Deployed Experts,” will receive training through OpenAI’s Partner Network. This team will work directly with corporate clients to implement customized applications.

Integration with IBM Platforms

IBM plans to integrate OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage. This platform serves as IBM’s primary AI tool for its consultants. Additionally, the partnership expands on a previous June agreement called the OpenAI Daybreak Cyber Partner Program. The new deal integrates OpenAI’s models with IBM Autonomous Security, which is the company’s multi-agent-powered cybersecurity service.

Strategic Context and Financial Outlook

This partnership represents a model-agnostic strategy for IBM. The company continues to combine its own Granite family of artificial intelligence models with third-party technologies. IBM has previously established similar alliances, including a deal with Anthropic last year. The company positions itself as an integrator of multiple models through its watsonx platform and global consulting business.

The announcement follows a reduction in IBM’s 2026 revenue forecast last month, which resulted from weaker-than-expected quarterly results. However, Chief Executive Arvind Krishna stated during the last earnings call that AI remains a long-term growth driver. He noted that AI adoption is currently complementing, rather than replacing, demand for IBM’s mainframe business. This collaboration helps OpenAI expand its reach, following similar agreements with IT services firms like Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services.
