IoT security research has advanced significantly with King Saud University’s publication of a specialized study in Computer Science Review, a journal ranked among the top 5% of publications worldwide in computer science and artificial intelligence. The study analyzed scientific literature published between 2009 and 2024, drawing on reliable databases including IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and arXiv.

The research employs an integrative review methodology to examine vulnerabilities and threats across IoT systems. Researchers classified IoT systems into three main categories: real-time systems, decision-making systems, and query and monitoring systems. This classification improves the accuracy of identifying security risks specific to each system type.

Framework Development and Methodology

The research team developed a methodological framework connecting major security vulnerabilities, including weak encryption, authentication failures, and potential cyber attacks, with corresponding defensive solutions. The framework addresses gaps in previous studies by integrating network and application layers in IoT security analysis, moving beyond traditional approaches that treat these layers separately.

Recommendations for IoT Security Enhancement

The study recommends implementing a zero-trust model supported by artificial intelligence technologies, edge computing, and software-defined networks (SDN) to strengthen smart system security. Researchers provided practical application models and case studies demonstrating how these solutions can be implemented in sensitive environments.

The IoT security research holds practical value for critical sectors including smart healthcare, smart cities, and industrial and logistics systems. The proposed analytical framework improves vulnerability detection accuracy and enhances reliability and sustainability of smart systems operating in these domains.

The study involved an international research team led by Professor Abdulrazzaq from International Information Technology University in Kazakhstan as the lead researcher. Dr. Abraar bint Mohammed Al-Ajlan, associate professor of computer science and artificial intelligence at King Saud University’s Common First Year Deanship, contributed as a co-author, reflecting collaborative efforts to develop comprehensive solutions for IoT security challenges.
