OpenAI superapp development marks a significant strategic shift for the company, as it moves to consolidate ChatGPT, its Codex coding tool, and the Atlas browser into a single desktop application. The company said the move aims to streamline resources and sharpen its competitive position against rival Anthropic.

Chief of Applications Fidji Simo will oversee the product consolidation. OpenAI President Greg Brockman, who currently leads the company’s computing efforts, will assist Simo in managing the product revamp and related organizational changes, an OpenAI spokeswoman said.

Why OpenAI Is Consolidating Its Products

The strategy change follows a period in which OpenAI launched multiple stand-alone products that did not always connect with users. Executives said the fragmented approach slowed development and diluted focus across teams. In an internal note to employees, Simo stated: “We realized we were spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks, and that we need to simplify our efforts. That fragmentation has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want.”

In an all-hands meeting last week, Simo told employees the company could not afford to be distracted by “side quests” given Anthropic’s rapid success in winning enterprise and coding customers. An OpenAI spokeswoman said the company was operating under a “code red” posture.

OpenAI Superapp and Agentic AI Capabilities

The OpenAI superapp will center on so-called “agentic” artificial intelligence capabilities, where AI systems can work autonomously on a user’s computer to carry out tasks such as writing software and analyzing data. Over the coming months, the company plans to expand its Codex app with productivity-related features beyond coding before merging it with ChatGPT and the Atlas browser.

Simo stated in her internal note: “This is an opportunity to combine the strongest AI consumer app and brand with the strongest agentic app and really leverage our consumer scale to give agentic capabilities to everyone.” The mobile ChatGPT app will remain unchanged during this transition.

Competition With Anthropic Drives Urgency

OpenAI and Anthropic are engaged in a direct business competition to increase sales from enterprises seeking AI tools that boost employee productivity. Selling to enterprises was not an initial focus for OpenAI. However, the company renewed its efforts after observing the success of Anthropic’s Claude Code and Cowork products.

Both companies are considering public listings as soon as the end of 2026 and are working to meet ambitious revenue growth targets outlined to investors. The competitive pressure has accelerated OpenAI’s internal review of its product portfolio.

Executive Review and Organizational Changes

Top executives including Chief Executive Sam Altman, Chief Research Officer Mark Chen, and Simo spent several weeks reviewing OpenAI’s product portfolio and identifying areas to deprioritize. The company said the new superapp structure will enable teams to work more closely together and allow the research division to focus on improving one central product.

OpenAI’s organizational structure grew complex partly due to the range of products it launched in the prior year, including the video-generator Sora and a new hardware device. The consolidation effort represents a deliberate effort to reduce that complexity ahead of a potential public offering.

“We realized we were spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks, and that we need to simplify our efforts.”
