A new report from the Project Management Institute (PMI) reveals that rising project complexity is now a major threat to organizational success.
Specifically, the 16th edition of the Pulse of the Profession report indicates that 81% of professionals surveyed see an increase in this challenge. Consequently, teams that manage these difficult environments effectively are five times more likely to succeed.
According to the research, teams managing these systems achieve an 88% success rate. Meanwhile, teams that struggle with these issues experience a success rate of only 14%. In addition, nearly 31% of highly intricate initiatives fail to deliver their intended benefits. This failure rate is more than double the average rate reported for standard initiatives.
Understanding Project Complexity
The report states that project complexity is no longer an exception in modern business operations. In fact, 97% of surveyed professionals managed at least one highly intricate initiative over the past year. Furthermore, more than half of all current initiatives are now classified as complex. As a result, organizations must shift from traditional task management to systems thinking.
This shift is particularly relevant for the Middle East and North Africa region. Notably, regional organizations are currently accelerating their digital transformation plans and national development agendas. Therefore, managing interconnected initiatives has become a critical priority for regional business leaders.
The Financial Cost of Failure
Failing to manage these intricate systems leads to significant operational and financial consequences. Specifically, four out of five complex initiatives experience negative outcomes. These issues include delivery disruptions, strategic misalignment, and declining team morale.
Technology and AI Drivers
Rapidly evolving technology is a primary driver of these operational challenges. For instance, 48% of professionals cited fast tool cycles as a key contributor to project complexity. Meanwhile, 72% of chief executive officers identified artificial intelligence and automation as the main drivers of operating model changes.
Strategies for Project Success
Pierre Le Manh, President and CEO of PMI, stated that strategy is delivered through projects rather than boardrooms.
“Strategy isn’t delivered in the boardroom, it’s delivered through projects. When projects work, organizations execute. When they don’t, the strategy never leaves the deck.”
Pierre Le Manh, President & CEO, PMI
To address these challenges, high-performing organizations are adopting specific structured frameworks. Notably, initiatives using these frameworks achieve a 72% success rate compared to 61% for those without them. Furthermore, the presence of a Project Management Office (PMO) significantly improves the management of these intricate systems.
In addition, successful organizations prioritize sponsor alignment at the initiation phase of each initiative. They also utilize scenario planning to navigate market uncertainties and operational interdependencies. Consequently, these structured practices help teams maintain alignment and deliver expected benefits.
