The Roya platform has been developed by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in partnership with the General Directorate of Public Security to support security operations in the holy sites. This system uses artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to improve response times and decision-making during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.
Technical Capabilities of the Roya platform
The system analyzes satellite imagery and geospatial data to study traffic movement and monitor crowd density. Notably, it provides field indicators that assist security authorities in managing critical locations. Furthermore, these tools help improve the overall organization and safety of pilgrims across the holy sites.
In addition, the system offers detailed analyses of thermal zones and land surface temperature variations in Makkah. It detects irregular patterns and converts this data into spatial reports. Consequently, these reports help field teams access information faster and operate more efficiently.
Data Volume and Aerial Imaging
KACST stated that the Roya platform currently displays nearly 2,000 satellite images from the current and previous seasons. Meanwhile, 126 aerial imaging operations have been conducted to cover Makkah, Madinah, the holy sites, and the connecting roads. These operations provide detailed environmental assessments, specifically monitoring urban heat islands.
Automated Operations and Integration
All operations on the Roya platform are fully automated, from importing satellite data to processing and displaying real-time statistics. This automation accelerates the data-processing cycle and enhances operational efficiency. The system connects directly to the General Directorate of Public Security’s network through the Command and Control Center. It features an interactive interface that enables real-time data visualization, contributing to improved services for pilgrims and enhanced operational readiness in high-density locations.
Alignment with Saudi Vision 2030
This initiative is part of the National Laboratory’s efforts at KACST to build smart platforms. These technological solutions support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 by strengthening a digital economy driven by innovation. By utilizing advanced technologies, the project aims to enhance services in high-density locations.
The integration of these advanced technologies ensures that security forces can monitor environmental and climate factors in real time. As a result, the system provides a complete tool for managing the complex logistics of the annual pilgrimage.
