Sandisk has introduced an updated Sandisk Portable SSD portfolio designed to manage larger file sizes and content generated by artificial intelligence. The new three-tier lineup addresses the storage requirements of everyday users, creative enthusiasts, and production professionals. Notably, the portfolio includes the standard model, the Extreme version, and the Extreme PRO version, each offering specific performance metrics for different digital tasks.
The updated storage solutions aim to support the increasing volume of data produced in modern digital environments. Specifically, the Extreme model is now available with read speeds of up to 2,000MB/s, which is nearly twice the speed of its predecessor. This performance level allows users to transfer approximately 1,000 high-resolution photos in less than 60 seconds. Furthermore, the company stated that the full portfolio will continue to roll out globally throughout the year.
Technical Specifications of the Sandisk Portable SSD
The Extreme PRO model is engineered for professional photographers and filmmakers who require multi-stream workflows and real-time editing capabilities. It delivers transfer speeds of up to 4,000MB/s, supporting the movement of 10 minutes of 12K video in under one minute. Meanwhile, the standard Sandisk Portable SSD provides read speeds of up to 1,000MB/s in a compact design suitable for students and office workers needing reliable file backups.
“As photo and video resolutions continue to increase and AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, users at every level are managing more data across a wider range of devices.”
Susan Park, Vice President of Consumer Products at Sandisk
Durability and Security Features
Durability remains a primary focus for the new hardware designs. The standard model offers drop protection of up to two meters, while the Extreme and Extreme PRO versions are tested for drops of up to three meters. Additionally, these higher-tier models feature an IP65 rating for resistance against water and dust. Notably, the Extreme and Extreme PRO versions include 256-bit AES hardware encryption to enhance cybersecurity for sensitive professional data.
Professional and Creative Use Cases
The portfolio is structured to match specific user workloads. For instance, the Extreme PRO model supports capacities up to 8TB, catering to designers working with massive media libraries. In contrast, the standard model focuses on portability and ease of use for family archivists and personal data management. Consequently, the variety in the lineup ensures that storage performance scales with the complexity of the user’s digital projects.
Future Market Outlook
As digital transformation continues to accelerate, the demand for high-speed external storage is expected to grow. Sandisk stated that the new generation of SSDs balances performance and durability to meet evolving customer needs. Moreover, the integration of faster interfaces allows these devices to remain compatible with the latest computing hardware. The company plans to release additional capacity options for the standard and Extreme models later in 2026.
