The Saudi telecom coverage in Al-Baha and Asir has reached 99% for basic services, Communications and Information Technology Minister Eng. Abdullah Al-Swaha announced during a government press conference. The official detailed upcoming regional infrastructure projects scheduled for completion by 2028, according to Al Yaum.
Expanding Saudi telecom coverage by 2028
In Al-Baha, fifth-generation (5G) mobile connectivity currently stands at 49%. The ministry intends to increase this figure to 64% by 2028 to support growing visitor demand during seasonal events, connecting local digital infrastructure directly with national tourism initiatives.
Furthermore, residential fiber-optic connections in the province have experienced rapid expansion, increasing fivefold from an initial 5,000 homes to 30,000 homes. Under the ministry’s forward-looking regional roadmap, the network will be extended further to connect 50,000 households across Al-Baha by 2028.
Infrastructure Gains and High-Speed Networks in Asir
The Asir region recorded substantial progress in basic telecommunications access, rising from an initial baseline of 52% to 99% today. In addition to universal voice and standard data connectivity, high-speed 5G network reach in the province currently stands at 66%, with an active target to reach 78% coverage by 2028.
These comprehensive upgrades represent a critical component of regional modernization within the digital economy, supporting local businesses, public administration, and residents across the southern provinces.
Decade-Long Sector Performance and Oversight
During the briefing, the minister highlighted the accelerated pace of the Kingdom’s digital infrastructure deployment. Al-Swaha noted that the Kingdom completed nationwide network deployments in just 10 years that historically required 30 years in geographically comparable countries such as Canada and Australia.
Ongoing work in telecom infrastructure is monitored through regular performance reviews overseen directly by the Crown Prince. Al-Swaha emphasized continuous coordination with Prince Turki bin Talal, Governor of Asir, to track regional implementation and resolve operational bottlenecks.
Addressing intermittent service gaps experienced during peak travel and tourist seasons, the minister acknowledged past shortcomings and offered an apology for any past deficiencies in coverage, reaffirming a dedication to full nationwide service reliability.
