SpaceX and Google are in talks to launch orbital data centers in space, according to people familiar with the discussions. The potential partnership would advance both companies’ efforts to place computing infrastructure beyond Earth’s atmosphere, a technology that SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk has positioned as the next frontier for his rocket company.

A launch agreement would pair the two firms as they prepare to compete in the emerging orbital data center market. Google is simultaneously exploring agreements with other rocket-launch providers, one person said. The speculative technology has formed a centerpiece of SpaceX’s pitch to investors ahead of its planned public listing this summer, which is anticipated to rank among the largest initial public offerings on record.

Google’s Project Suncatcher Initiative

Google announced plans last year to launch prototype satellites by 2027 as part of Project Suncatcher, a moonshot initiative focused on space-based computing. The company is collaborating with Planet Labs to build those satellites. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a November Fox News interview that the approach would involve sending small racks of machines to test in satellites before scaling the effort. “There’s no doubt to me that a decade or so away, we’ll be viewing it as a more normal way to build data centers,” Pichai stated.

Google’s Stake in SpaceX

Google was an early investor in SpaceX and currently owns 6.1% of the company, according to a regulatory filing. Google executive Don Harrison serves on SpaceX’s board. As the leading commercial launch provider, SpaceX holds a dominant position in the satellite-launch sector, making it a critical partner for any company seeking to reach orbit.

Recent SpaceX Business Developments

SpaceX last week announced a computing resource sale to the artificial intelligence company Anthropic. The agreement includes Anthropic’s stated interest in collaborating with SpaceX on orbital data center projects. Earlier this year, SpaceX filed an application with federal regulators to launch up to one million satellites to support its orbital data-center ambitions. SpaceX also secured an option to acquire AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion later this year, part of a broader effort to strengthen its technical capabilities.

Why Space-Based Computing Matters

Industry leaders view orbital computing as a potential solution to constraints facing Earth-based data centers, which require substantial land and continuous power supplies. Space-based data centers could operate using solar panels, eliminating the power limitations and ecological concerns associated with terrestrial facilities. However, significant engineering challenges remain. Benjamin Lee, a professor of engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, noted the technical hurdles that have made some industry experts skeptical about the technology’s near-term viability.

SpaceX built its reputation as the world’s leading private launch provider, having sent NASA astronauts to the International Space Station and deployed thousands of satellites as part of its Starlink internet network. The company also launches satellites for paying commercial customers. As SpaceX prepares for its public debut, it has struck multiple deals reshaping its financial position, including the $1.25 trillion valuation achieved through its acquisition of xAI.
