The Terafab project, a joint venture between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, was announced by Elon Musk as a planned chip manufacturing facility in Austin, Texas. Musk described the facility as the largest of its kind ever built. He made the announcement during a livestream on X.

Musk, who serves as CEO of all three companies, said the project aims to produce a terawatt of computing power annually. He stated that existing chip manufacturers, including Samsung, TSMC, and Micron, currently supply only about two percent of what Tesla and SpaceX require for future computing needs.

Why Terafab? The Supply Gap Driving the Decision

Musk stated the reasoning plainly during the livestream. “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips,” he said. “And we need the chips so we’re going to build the Terafab.”

Two Chip Types: Earth and Space Applications

Musk said the Terafab project will produce two distinct categories of chips. The first targets terrestrial applications, including Full Self-Driving technology and Optimus humanoid robots. The second is a higher-powered, more durable chip designed specifically for use in space environments.

The space-focused chip connects to a broader orbital ambition. Earlier this year, SpaceX filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission to launch one million satellites. The stated goal is to create what Musk described as an “orbital data center.” The autonomous driving and robotics chips, meanwhile, would support Tesla’s expanding product lines on the ground.

Terafab Project Scope and Timeline

The Terafab project is structured as a joint venture, pooling resources from Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Austin, Texas serves as the starting point, given Tesla’s existing infrastructure in the city. Musk framed the facility as essential to the long-term computing demands of all three companies.

The project’s stated ultimate goal extends beyond commercial chip supply. Musk described it as a step toward harnessing solar energy at scale and building what he called a “galactic civilization.” However, the immediate operational focus remains on meeting the chip shortfall facing Tesla and SpaceX.

The Terafab project joins a list of large-scale Musk ventures that have faced delays or fallen short of initial targets. The Hyperloop concept, a $40,000 Cybertruck price point, and fully autonomous driving capabilities are among the projects that did not meet their originally stated timelines or specifications. Analysts and observers are likely to weigh this history when assessing the $20 billion facility’s projected scope.

Nevertheless, the chip manufacturing ambition reflects a broader industry trend. Major technology companies globally are investing in domestic and proprietary semiconductor production to reduce dependence on third-party suppliers.
