The number of Threads active users has officially reached 500 million monthly.
Consequently, the social media giant is rolling out a suite of new community tools and personalized feed controls to deepen user engagement. According to Meta, this growth has been driven largely by communities. Specifically, these are groups of users sharing interests spanning books, basketball, parenting, and music on social media. To mark the milestone, the company is graduating its communities feature out of beta.
Growth of Threads Active Users
The milestone of 500 million Threads active users highlights the rapid expansion of the platform.
Meanwhile, Meta is launching updates to make these groups easier to browse. For instance, the communities hub is being added to the main menu to the left of the feed. Furthermore, communities will receive distinct icons to make them more recognizable across the platform. A progress indicator will also show users how close a topic is to achieving full community status. Notably, this indicator will outline what actions users can take to help the topic reach that status.
New Community Features and Navigation
In addition to visual updates, champion recognition is being expanded to more users across communities.
Local communities are also launching in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan with native-language tags. Meanwhile, Meta stated that Live Chats will expand to more communities in the coming weeks. These upcoming Live Chats will feature co-hosting capabilities. Additionally, users will gain the ability to quote moments directly to their personal feeds. These updates aim to encourage closer connections among the growing base of Threads active users worldwide.
Personalized Feed Controls with Your Algo
Alongside the community updates, Meta is introducing Your Algo, a new personal feed setting.
This tool builds on the Dear Algo feature launched in February to improve apps integration. While Dear Algo allowed users to tell the algorithm what they wanted to see, Your Algo adds a private layer of control. Specifically, the new tool lets users filter specific topics from their feed. Users can also set how long a request lasts across one, three, or seven days. Both tools will be manageable from a single hub. Currently, Your Algo has rolled out in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
Platform Context and Future Outlook
Meta stated these updates are the beginning of continued investment in the platform based on user feedback.
The company originally launched Threads in July 2023 in a bid to compete against Elon Musk-owned X. The platform continues to develop new features to retain its expanding user base.
