ZTE Corporation has unveiled a multi-ONU burst 200G-PON prototype at MWC Barcelona 2026, achieving a transmission rate of 200 Gbps. The company said the demonstration marks a milestone in optical access technology development.

What the 200G-PON Prototype Delivers

The prototype integrates coherent technology into a Point-to-Multipoint (P2MP) architecture. Coherent transmission typically handles continuous signals, but PON uplink relies on short bursts from multiple Optical Network Units (ONUs), creating significant engineering challenges.

Flash Switch Technology Explained

ZTE developed an optical signal “flash switch” technology that enables nanosecond-level on-off switching of burst frames at the transmitting end. This approach eliminates interference between multiple ONU burst frames, addressing the challenge of rapid start-stop control in high-speed optical signals.

At the receiving end, the system achieves 50-nanosecond frame recovery. This reduces transmission overhead and increases throughput, supporting large numbers of concurrent terminal connections. The telecommunications industry has long sought solutions to this specific bottleneck in coherent PON deployments.
