More than 20 nations have agreed to a new 6G development timeline to align research and establish communication channels. The US National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced the initiative on July 30, 2026. This coalition includes countries from Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, and Central America.
The participating countries signed the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security. This agreement establishes a structured framework for international cooperation. The 6G Development Timeline Phases
The agreed schedule outlines specific goals for the next year. Within one month, the involved government agencies will establish direct communication channels. Furthermore, they will start working with the broader telecommunications industry within three months to identify potential barriers and explore political concerns.
The three-month phase also includes defining security matters and exploring economic concerns. Meanwhile, the nations aim to create informal strategies within six months. These strategies will emerge from expert-level discussions, the exchange of academic research papers, or simply more candid intergovernmental dialogue.
Focus on Security and Global Standards
The coalition plans to hold in-person meetings within 12 months to discuss security and leadership. During these talks, representatives will address funding and analyze potential cybersecurity risks. Additionally, they will use current relationships to accelerate information exchange and contribute to global standardization efforts.
