Qualcomm expects the first pre-commercial 6G devices to enter the market by 2028, followed by commercial shipments in 2029. Speaking at the MWC Shanghai 2026 event, a senior executive outlined the company’s timeline for the next generation of telecommunications connectivity. This transition aims to integrate artificial intelligence directly into wireless networks.
The shift toward these advanced systems relies heavily on upcoming industry specifications. Specifically, the timeline for 6G devices is closely linked to the 3GPP Release 21 standards. These standards are scheduled for initial approval in March 2027, which provides the technical foundation for hardware development.
Technical Timeline for 6G devices
John Smee, Senior Vice President at Qualcomm, explained that the upcoming network generation will connect digital and physical environments. Consequently, users will interact with technology through persistent, context-aware agents. These agents will operate across various form factors, including smartwatches, voice interfaces, and connected glasses. This shift represents a departure from current app-based systems.

Smee stated that artificial intelligence will serve as the primary user interface in the post-2030 era. He noted that the technology will function across all network levels, from data centers to the edge.

This perspective aligns with previous statements from Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon. During the Computex event in Taiwan, Amon described the upcoming network as the first generation of mobile devices to run artificial intelligence natively. As a result, the architecture will support complex computational tasks directly on the hardware. This integration will distribute processing power across the entire network.
The integration of native intelligence is expected to reduce latency and improve data security. Furthermore, local processing on devices will decrease the reliance on cloud servers. This decentralized approach will enable real-time decision-making for autonomous systems and smart city applications.
