ACWA Power finalized battery storage contracts with the Saudi Power Procurement Company to develop three independent energy storage facilities in Saudi Arabia. The utility developer announced the agreements through a formal disclosure on the Saudi stock exchange (Tadawul), confirming the development, financing, construction, ownership, and long-term operation of the installations across the Hail and Makkah regions.

The three facilities comprise the Al-Kahfah, Hadan, and Al-Muwayh projects. Each facility is designed with an energy generation output of 500 megawatts along with a storage capacity reaching 2,000 megawatt-hours, resulting in a collective capacity of 1,500 megawatts and 6,000 megawatt-hours across the three sites. The agreements were signed between the principal buyer and three specialized project entities: Bareeq Energy Storage Project Company, New Al-Muwayh Energy Storage Project Company, and New Ishaa Energy Storage Project Company.

Terms of the Battery Storage Contracts

Under the signed agreements, each contract extends for a duration of 15 years starting from the commercial operation date of the respective plant. ACWA Power confirmed that it will hold an equity stake of 34.9 percent in each of the three venture companies once financial closing is completed, according to a report by Asharq Al-Awsat.

The physical footprint of the initiatives spans strategically important areas across the Kingdom. Specifically, the installations in Hail and Makkah will support national grid stability by storing excess electrical energy during periods of lower consumption and dispatching it rapidly during peak demand hours.
