Android is undergoing a significant AI overhaul in 2026, with Google rolling out expanded Android AI features under the Gemini Intelligence banner. The expansion brings more automation and customization capabilities to Android devices, with the company preparing to share details at its upcoming I/O conference.

App Automation Expands Across Android

App automation represents a major focus for Android going forward. Google began testing automation features earlier in 2026 with DoorDash and Uber on Pixel and Samsung phones. The company says it has spent intervening months refining the system after initial launch issues.

Android will handle more complex automations across applications. For example, the system could retrieve a course syllabus from Gmail and then navigate to a shopping app to add required books to a cart. Another capability involves taking a picture of a travel brochure and instructing Gemini to book similar accommodations through the Expedia app. However, automation will only function in select applications, mostly limited to food and grocery ordering, as well as ride-hailing services.

Auto Browse Feature Coming to Android

The Gemini-powered Auto Browse feature, which debuted on desktop Chrome several months ago, will launch on Android toward the end of June for all Android 12 and higher devices. This feature uses cloud-based Gemini models to parse webpages and handle multi-step tasks. Users can observe the AI navigating the web or allow it to operate in the background until authorization is needed for sensitive actions.

Autofill System Gets AI Upgrade

The autofill system in Android is receiving an AI automation enhancement. Autofill with Google will integrate with Gemini’s Personal Intelligence, enabling it to fill in additional information when encountering online forms. Beyond standard details like name and address, the system may add data such as vehicle license plate information. Google says the feature is opt-in, allowing users to maintain traditional autofill experiences if preferred.

New Widget Creation and Gemini Features

Gemini Intelligence is powering additional convenience features in Android, including AI-generated widgets. Google calls this capability “Create My Widget.” These widgets primarily display data from user accounts or information available across the web, rather than creating entirely novel functionality.

The integration of artificial intelligence into Android represents Google’s broader strategy to embed AI capabilities directly into the operating system. These features aim to reduce routine tasks and improve user efficiency through automated processes, provided users have access to supported applications and compatible devices running Android 12 or later.
