Dublin-based enterprise AI infrastructure company Jentic has launched a free API Scoring tool to evaluate whether enterprise application programming interfaces are ready for use by autonomous AI agents. The new utility is available immediately as a command-line interface (CLI) and a web-based user interface.
Measuring AI Readiness Across Six Dimensions
The software evaluates APIs across six specific dimensions to determine their compatibility with artificial intelligence systems. These dimensions assess technical correctness, clarity for machine interpretation, consistent behavior, security controls, discoverability, and autonomous execution. Notably, traditional APIs were designed for human developers who can interpret incomplete documentation, whereas AI agents require precise, machine-readable descriptions.
To address this gap, the API Scoring tool provides engineering teams with a standardized metric to measure and track their progress. The tool runs in under a minute, allowing developers to integrate the CLI directly into their existing software development workflows.
Integrating the API Scoring tool into Developer Workflows
Developers can configure the utility to generate a fresh score automatically each time they update their codebase. This automation provides engineering leaders with a clear record of their technical assets over time. Furthermore, the underlying scoring framework is published under the Apache 2.0 open-source license, allowing external developers to inspect and extend the methodology.
“The industry has conflated validity with usability for too long. A syntactically correct API description guarantees one thing: conformance to the spec’s grammar. It says nothing about whether an agent can discover, understand, and execute against that API reliably.”
Frank Kilcommins, Head of Enterprise Architecture at Jentic
Industry Standards and Security Controls
The development of the framework involved input from senior figures in the API standards community, including representatives from the OpenAPI Initiative. Security remains a primary focus of the evaluation, ensuring that AI agents operate within defined boundaries. Organizations can use these metrics to protect their systems while adopting automated technologies. Meanwhile, teams requiring custom configurations or on-premise deployments can contact the company directly.
Future Outlook for Enterprise AI Integration
As organizations increasingly adopt autonomous agents, the demand for machine-compatible interfaces is expected to grow. Jentic, founded in 2024, plans to develop additional tools to help enterprises transition their existing systems. Consequently, the API Scoring tool serves as an initial step for companies to benchmark their current capabilities.
Sean Blanchfield, CEO of Jentic, stated that APIs must now be built for agents rather than just human developers. The company’s platform is designed to work across different cloud providers and existing infrastructure setups. Therefore, establishing clear metrics will be essential for businesses aiming to deploy AI agents safely and effectively.
