Reports indicate a significant shift in the Apple AI strategy as the company collaborates with Alibaba Group to train a large language model specifically for the Chinese market.

This move represents a change in how the technology giant approaches its software offerings in China. The upcoming launch of the Apple Intelligence suite in China will follow an update to the iOS operating system. Notably, this localized model allows the company to maintain greater control over its user experience in a highly competitive overseas market.

Shift in Apple AI strategy

The new partnership marks a departure from the previous Apple AI strategy of relying solely on existing models from domestic partners. Previously, US-based artificial intelligence models remained unavailable in China due to local regulatory restrictions.

Chinese smartphone vendors previously gained an advantage by deploying generative artificial intelligence features in their handsets ahead of international competitors. Consequently, the updated Apple AI strategy aims to close this gap by integrating local solutions directly into its operating systems.

Collaboration with Alibaba

Under the new arrangement, Alibaba’s Qwen model will function within the Chinese version of Apple Intelligence. This technology will run alongside existing systems from Baidu on various mobile devices and computers.

Earlier reports of discussions between the two companies emerged in February 2025. However, the rollout experienced delays because the company had to adapt its features to comply with local Chinese regulations.

Regulatory Approval in China

The development follows a lengthy regulatory process that concluded last month. The Cyberspace Administration of China registered the generative AI service, which cleared the way for the system to debut on compatible iPhones.

Industry analysts suggest this rare collaboration could make the company the first non-domestic entity to secure Chinese approval for a proprietary AI system. This approval is crucial for maintaining hardware sales in the region.

Integration Across Devices

The integration of Alibaba’s Qwen model will extend beyond smartphones to include iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro models. Recently, a Chinese-language guide was published explaining how Mac users could connect the Qwen model to Siri and Writing Tools, though the document was subsequently removed.

This integration is expected to enhance the competitiveness of the company’s computers and tablets in China. The official rollout of these features will occur in the coming months.
