The Arm AGI CPU marks a historic shift for Arm Holdings, as the company releases its first self-designed chip after nearly 36 years of exclusively licensing its processor designs to other manufacturers. The U.K.-based semiconductor firm unveiled the production-ready chip at an event in San Francisco on Tuesday.
What the Arm AGI CPU Does
The Arm AGI CPU is built for running inference workloads inside artificial intelligence data centers. Arm developed the chip using its Neoverse family of CPU IP cores. The processor is designed to manage thousands of distributed tasks, including memory and storage management, workload scheduling, and data movement across systems.
Meta Is the First Customer
Meta is the first customer for the Arm AGI CPU. The chip is designed to work alongside Meta’s training and inference accelerator hardware. Arm also listed OpenAI, Cerebras, and Cloudflare among its launch partners for the new processor.

A Strategic Break from Arm’s Licensing Model
Arm has built its business over 35 years by licensing chip designs to companies such as Nvidia and Apple, rather than manufacturing its own silicon. This move places Arm in direct competition with many of its existing partners. The company is majority owned by Japanese conglomerate SoftBank Group.
Arm began developing the chip in 2023, according to reporting by CNBC. The processors are currently available to order. TechCrunch stated it reached out to Arm for additional details on the development and release timeline.
Why CPUs Matter for AI Infrastructure
While GPUs have received significant attention for training and running AI models, Arm argues that CPUs play an equally important role in data center racks. The company said growing demands on computing hardware require an evolution of the processor. Moreover, CPUs are becoming increasingly difficult to source in the current market.
Arm’s entry into chip manufacturing signals a broader shift in how semiconductor IP companies are positioning themselves within the AI infrastructure supply chain. The company has not yet disclosed pricing details or volume availability timelines for the Arm AGI CPU.
