Ask Maps, a conversational feature built into Google Maps, began rolling out on March 12, 2026, alongside Immersive Navigation — the platform’s most significant navigation update in over a decade.
Google said the two features combine its Gemini AI models with data from over 300 million places and a contributor community of more than 500 million users. The company described the update as a fundamental change to what a map can do.
What Ask Maps Does
Ask Maps allows users to submit complex, conversational queries directly within Google Maps. Users can ask questions such as “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?” and receive a customized map alongside a direct answer.
The feature draws on Maps’ database of over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors. Responses are personalized based on a user’s search history and saved locations within the app.
Moreover, Ask Maps supports direct action from within the conversation. Users can book restaurant reservations, save locations to a list, share places with contacts, and get directions — all without leaving the chat interface.
Ask Maps Availability and Platforms
Ask Maps is currently rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS. Google said a desktop version is coming soon. The feature is powered by Gemini models, which Google said enable the artificial intelligence layer behind personalized recommendations.
Immersive Navigation: A Redesigned Driving Experience
Immersive Navigation delivers a redesigned 3D driving view that reflects real-world buildings, overpasses, and terrain. The update uses Gemini models to analyze Street View imagery and aerial photos, providing accurate representations of landmarks and road features along a route.
The update highlights critical road details including lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs. In addition, voice guidance has been updated to use more natural language — for example, “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South.”
Google Maps currently incorporates over 5 million traffic updates per second globally. The platform’s driver community contributes more than 10 million real-time disruption reports — such as road construction and crashes — every day. Immersive Navigation surfaces these updates as alerts during active navigation.
Route Planning and Arrival Features
Immersive Navigation also introduces alternate route tradeoff information, showing users whether a different path offers less traffic or a faster arrival time with a toll. Furthermore, the feature provides pre-departure destination previews using Street View imagery, including parking recommendations.
As users approach their destination, Maps highlights the building entrance, nearby parking options, and the correct side of the street. Google said this guidance is designed to take users from the final turn to the front door without confusion.
Immersive Navigation began rolling out in the United States on March 12, 2026.
