The Google Maps update announced on March 12, 2026, introduces two major features: Ask Maps, a conversational search tool powered by Gemini, and Immersive Navigation, a redesigned 3D driving experience the company describes as its largest navigation overhaul in more than a decade.
Ask Maps Brings Conversational Search to Google Maps
Ask Maps allows users to pose complex, natural-language questions directly within the app. Users can ask queries such as “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?” and receive a conversational answer alongside a customized map view.
The feature draws on data from more than 300 million places and a contributor community of over 500 million users. Responses are personalized based on a user’s search history and saved locations within Maps.
Ask Maps also supports direct action from search results. Users can book restaurant reservations, save locations to lists, share places with contacts, and get turn-by-turn directions without leaving the conversation interface.
Gemini Models Power the Google Maps Update
Google stated that artificial intelligence models from its Gemini family underpin both new features. For Immersive Navigation, Gemini analyzes Street View imagery and aerial photographs to construct an accurate spatial representation of a user’s route, including landmarks, medians, and road infrastructure.
The system processes over 5 million traffic updates per second globally. Furthermore, the Maps community contributes more than 10 million real-time road disruption reports every day, feeding data on construction zones and crashes into the navigation system.
Immersive Navigation Redesigns the Driving Experience
Immersive Navigation replaces the existing driving interface with a vivid 3D map that renders surrounding buildings, overpasses, and terrain. The system highlights road details such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs when approaching complex intersections or merges.
Voice guidance has also been updated to use more conversational phrasing. Instead of standard turn instructions, drivers hear contextual prompts such as “Go past this exit and take the next one for Illinois 43 South.” In addition, the map now offers a broader route view with smart zoom and transparent building overlays to help drivers anticipate lane changes well in advance.
The feature also addresses the final segment of a journey. Before departure, users can preview their destination using Street View imagery and receive parking recommendations. As drivers approach, Maps highlights the building entrance, nearby parking options, and the correct side of the street.
Alternate Route Tradeoffs and Real-Time Alerts
Immersive Navigation now surfaces tradeoff information when alternate routes are available. Maps will inform drivers whether a different path offers less traffic at the cost of additional travel time, or a faster arrival with a toll charge. Consequently, drivers can make informed decisions without manually comparing options.
Real-time alerts for road construction and crashes appear along the active route, sourced from the community of drivers using the platform. This connected data layer updates continuously throughout a trip.
Availability and Rollout Timeline
Ask Maps begins rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS starting March 12, 2026, with a desktop version to follow. Immersive Navigation starts rolling out in the United States on the same date, with expansion to additional markets planned over the coming months.
The feature will become available on eligible iOS and Android devices, as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in integration. Google did not specify a timeline for international expansion beyond the initial U.S. launch.
