China Changan Automobile Group has launched the BlueCore HEV system, a self-charging hybrid designed for the Middle East and Africa. The system was unveiled at a global event in Chongqing, China, and aims to reduce urban fuel consumption while eliminating the need for external charging.
The BlueCore HEV system combines advanced hybrid engineering with AI cloud-based energy management. It operates as a self-charging system that intelligently optimizes the balance between fuel and electric power, removing the need for plug-in charging. In real-world testing, sedans achieved urban fuel consumption as low as 2.98 liters per 100 kilometers.
Tailored for Regional Conditions
The system addresses specific challenges in the Middle East and Africa, including summer temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius and uneven charging infrastructure. In dense urban areas like Riyadh, Cairo, and Casablanca, the system improves fuel efficiency in stop-and-go traffic. This provides a practical solution for regional driving conditions, combining standard refueling convenience with electric driving smoothness and freedom from range anxiety.
Development and Investment
Zhao Fei, general manager of Changan, stated that the BlueCore HEV system is the company’s global hybrid mobility solution. Development took six years, involving 1,000 engineers and an investment of over 2 billion yuan. The system incorporates 163 patented technologies. Yang Daiyong, executive vice president, described the system as an innovation in energy efficiency and intelligence.
BlueCore HEV System Highlights
The BlueCore HEV system offers low fuel consumption, especially in city driving, smooth transitions between electric and fuel power, a quieter driving experience, and reliable performance under harsh conditions. Changan conducted over 2 million kilometers of vehicle reliability verification, more than 70 special road tests, 350 hours of continuous laboratory testing, and over 1,000 hours of extreme condition testing to ensure durability.
Future Outlook
The system builds on Changan’s powertrain evolution from its first engine in 2012 to the BlueCore energy brand in 2019. Now trusted by over 10 million users worldwide, the BlueCore HEV system will serve as a fundamental basis for Changan’s expanding portfolio. The company sees it as a key contributor to its growth in global hybrid mobility.
The launch underscores Changan’s commitment to providing practical hybrid solutions for emerging markets.
