ChatGPT personal finance capabilities are now available in preview for Pro users in the United States. The feature allows users to securely connect their financial accounts, view spending patterns, and receive tailored financial guidance directly within ChatGPT.

The platform can now access account balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities across more than 12,000 financial institutions through Plaid, with Intuit support coming later. Users maintain full control over their data and can disconnect accounts at any time. Once connected, ChatGPT displays a dashboard showing portfolio performance, spending by category, subscriptions, and upcoming payments.

How the ChatGPT Personal Finance Feature Works

Users can access the feature by opening Finances from the ChatGPT sidebar or by saying “@Finances, connect my accounts” in any conversation. The connection process is guided and uses secure authentication through Plaid. After accounts are linked, ChatGPT begins syncing and categorizing financial data, a process that may take several minutes.

Beyond account connections, users can share personal financial context such as savings goals, debts, or major purchases they are planning. ChatGPT stores this information as “financial memories” to provide more personalized guidance across future conversations. The feature is available on ChatGPT’s web and iOS platforms.

Data Privacy and Security Controls

OpenAI has built privacy protections into the experience. ChatGPT cannot access full account numbers or make any changes to connected accounts. Users can adjust how their financial data is used for artificial intelligence model training through Settings > Data controls.

Financial information is treated separately from regular conversations. Users can delete financial memories at any time from the Finances page, or disconnect accounts entirely through Settings > Apps > Finances. Once disconnected, synced account data is deleted from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. Temporary chats do not access connected financial accounts.

Performance Benchmarking Against Finance Tasks

The personal finance experience defaults to GPT-5.5 Thinking, OpenAI’s latest reasoning model. OpenAI developed an internal benchmark to evaluate response quality on complex financial tasks, working with over 50 finance professionals to grade ChatGPT’s performance.

In testing, GPT-5.5 Thinking scored 79 out of 100 on the personal finance benchmark, while GPT-5.5 Pro achieved 82.5 out of 100. Earlier models GPT-5.4 Thinking scored 76.6, GPT-5.5 Instant scored 65.1, and GPT-5.3 Instant scored 59.4. The benchmark combines expert-graded response quality with response accuracy across challenging finance tasks.

Real-World Use Cases and Limitations

ChatGPT can help users with goal planning, travel spend analysis, spending insights, scenario planning, investment risk assessment, and subscription reviews. The system reasons through context-dependent questions by combining account data with information about user goals, lifestyle, and priorities.

More than 200 million people visit ChatGPT monthly for budgeting questions, investment inquiries, and financial planning. However, OpenAI emphasizes that the feature is not a replacement for professional financial advice. Future integrations with ecosystem partners like Intuit will allow users to move from questions to action, such as understanding credit card approval odds or scheduling consultations with tax experts.

The preview rollout to U.S. Pro users will inform product improvements before expansion to Plus plan holders, with the eventual goal of making the feature available to all ChatGPT users. OpenAI is gathering real-world usage data to refine the experience and address any limitations.
