Dar es Salaam Port is undergoing a major expansion as EDECS Group secured a contract from DP World to redevelop seven operational yards across 90,000 square meters. The project focuses on Terminal 1, which is operated by DP World Dar es Salaam, with on-site civil works already underway in Tanzania.
Modernization Scope at Dar es Salaam Port
Under the contract terms, EDECS is delivering the design and construction of seven dedicated cargo and material handling yards. In addition, the project scope includes associated access gates and supporting utilities. The infrastructure works incorporate digital yard management systems, improved storage facilities, and sustainable engineering methods.
Furthermore, EDECS is installing a port-wide fire protection network that extends across the entire facility beyond the initial project boundary. The contractor is also deploying a high mast lighting system across all terminal facilities to support safety and operational efficiency during round-the-clock maritime operations in the economy sector.
Throughput Growth and Regional Trade Significance
As Tanzania’s primary maritime hub, the facility handles over 90 percent of the nation’s international sea trade. The site serves as the primary maritime gateway for seven landlocked countries across East and Central Africa, supporting regional trade links and Tanzania’s Vision 2050 development goals.
Annual throughput at Dar es Salaam Port has officially crossed the 30-million-tonne mark. Terminal 1 recorded a monthly container throughput of 46,582 TEUs in July 2026, rising significantly from the benchmark of 13,779 TEUs registered in May 2024. These figures highlight the operational impact of continuous terminal upgrades and modernized smart devices used in port tracking.
