The General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA) has launched a national initiative to update Saudi Arabia’s geospatial data by collecting and classifying more than 300,000 points of interest (POIs) across Riyadh. This project aims to enhance the completeness and reliability of the national database to support urban planning and smart decision-making.
Current Progress in Riyadh
The authority stated that field teams have already collected and classified more than 100,000 points of interest. This completed phase covers approximately 35% of the total area of Riyadh. Ongoing operations will expand this coverage to reach the target of 300,000 locations across the city.
The data collection spans multiple sectors to ensure a detailed representation of the city’s infrastructure. Specifically, the initiative covers locations within education, healthcare, hospitality, infrastructure, tourism, transport, attractions, sports, entertainment, and commercial sectors.
Defining Points of Interest
Points of interest are defined as specific locations that hold functional or service value for residents and planners. The collected information includes precise geographic coordinates, descriptive details, and classifications that define the characteristics of each site.
GEOSA is structuring this information according to an approved classification framework. This framework aligns with international practices for organizing geographic information, ensuring compatibility with global mapping standards.
Technology and Field Verification
The initiative relies on direct field verification to confirm the accuracy of the collected information. The authority uses modern technologies to host and manage this information through an interactive digital platform. This platform allows teams to monitor progress and review outputs in real time.
