The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recognized Saudi Arabia as a strategic partner in shaping a sustainable global digital future. This recognition highlights the long-standing partnership between the Kingdom and the union since 1949. Notably, Saudi Arabia has been a member of the ITU Council since 1965.
The Kingdom participates actively in international forums to advance global connectivity. Specifically, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) leads these efforts. Consequently, these initiatives support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to drive digital inclusion.
Shaping a Global Digital Future
The ITU report emphasized the Kingdom’s contributions to international cooperation in building a global digital future. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia continues to invest in its domestic telecommunications infrastructure. As a result, these investments have enabled reliable digital services and effective crowd management.
Regulatory Innovation and Training
The CST established the Digital Regulation Network to drive regulatory innovation. In addition, the CST Digital Regulations Academy has trained over 1,500 professionals from 190 countries. These training programs focus on digital regulation and public policy to build international capacity.
This educational initiative reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to knowledge sharing. Furthermore, the academy helps develop skilled professionals in the economy and technology sectors.
Women in the Technology Sector
The ITU commended the participation of women in the Saudi ICT sector, which reached nearly 35%. This percentage exceeds the average rates in Silicon Valley and the European Union. To support this growth, Saudi Arabia launched the “Building a Network of Women Leaders” initiative.
This program aims to prepare 300 women for leadership roles. Additionally, it strengthens mentorship across the technology sector.
Environmental Initiatives and Infrastructure
Saudi Arabia is also active in promoting a circular economy within the ICT sector. Specifically, the Kingdom developed the C.I.R.C.L.E.S framework to guide sustainable transformation. This framework helps manage e-waste and reduce carbon emissions globally.
Moreover, the Kingdom supports the adoption of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. Saudi Arabia is also a member of the International Advisory Body on Submarine Cable Resilience. This membership helps secure international digital infrastructure.
Finally, the Kingdom presented the “Connecting Humanity” study to offer cost-effective solutions to bridge the digital divide. This study was shared during the World Summit on the Information Society Review Process.
