Saudi authorities recognized General Motors Africa and Middle East for advancing connected vehicles and developing Internet of Things capabilities in the Kingdom. The Communications, Space & Technology Commission, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Digital Government Authority granted the recognition to GM as the only automaker honored in the category, with its OnStar platform serving as the primary proof point.
The initiative highlights how technology in the automotive sector contributes to local mobility infrastructure. Through OnStar systems built into Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac models, drivers receive over-the-air software updates, remote vehicle access, and cybersecurity features designed to maintain system reliability.
Expansion of Connected Vehicles in Saudi Arabia
OnStar delivers direct access to digital applications, operational insights, and remote safety functions across supported brands. General Motors explained that establishing strong digital foundations allows vehicles to receive functional updates continuously over time.
“Being recognized in the connected vehicles category is a meaningful milestone for GM because it reflects the value connected technology is delivering today, not just the promise of what comes next. OnStar gives customers a connected vehicle experience that can continue to evolve over time through software, apps and services.”
Luis De La Cruz, Managing Director, OnStar Africa and Middle East
Integration of Super Cruise Driver Assistance
The automaker is preparing to introduce Super Cruise, its hands-free driver assistance technology, to compatible regional roadways. The deployment remains subject to local regulatory approvals in telecommunications and transport sectors before rollout begins.
Super Cruise relies on digital infrastructure, vehicle connectivity, and verified map data already supported by OnStar. Company officials stated that autonomous driving capabilities require coordinated safety validation, software engineering, and dependable network services.
Local Infrastructure and Regulatory Alignment
GM noted it will coordinate with regulatory bodies in Saudi Arabia to adapt its global engineering systems to local roads. Adapting connected vehicle services ensures compliance with data protection policies and transport standards across the region.
Regional Operational Footprint
Headquartered in Dubai with a manufacturing facility in Egypt, GM Africa and Middle East maintains operations serving 29 countries. The company operates a network of 17 distributors and over 203 customer-facing facilities across the GCC, Levant, and Africa, distributing Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles.
