Hikvision has launched Guanlan Encoding, an AI-powered video compression technology that reduces storage costs by an average of 30 to 50 percent without compromising the quality of critical footage. The technology is built on the H.265 standard and uses Hikvision’s large-scale Guanlan AI model, extending its role from video analytics to the encoding path itself.

How Guanlan Encoding Works

Traditional codecs treat all pixels equally, forcing operators to choose between high-resolution images or storage efficiency. Guanlan Encoding ends this trade-off by identifying key elements in a scene — such as people and vehicles — and preserving them at full clarity through precise region-of-interest (ROI) segmentation. Background data is compressed at high ratios.

The technology combines two complementary modes. Dynamic sensing adapts bitrate allocation in real time to maintain detail in complex, fast-moving scenes. Static optimization applies high compression to low-motion footage, reducing some frames to just tens of bytes. Compatibility and Availability

Because Guanlan Encoding is based on the H.265 standard, it works seamlessly with existing H.265 decoders from Hikvision or third parties and supports advanced AI analytics.
