The HONOR ARRI collaboration was formally announced on March 4, 2026, in Barcelona, Spain, marking a technical partnership between HONOR and ARRI, the Munich-based designer and manufacturer of professional cinema camera systems. The agreement aims to integrate core elements of ARRI Image Science into consumer mobile devices.
ARRI has received 20 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over its 109-year history. The company’s camera systems are used in major film productions worldwide. HONOR produces a range of consumer devices including smartphones, PCs, tablets, and wearables.
What the HONOR ARRI Collaboration Covers
The partnership focuses on translating ARRI’s cinematic imaging principles into HONOR’s mobile imaging architecture. In cinema, image science governs color rendering, highlight and shadow behavior, and consistency from capture to final display. The collaboration applies these principles to the constraints of smartphone hardware, including smaller sensors, integrated system-on-chip designs, and different optical stacks.
James Li, CEO of HONOR, said the partnership brings cinematic standards and professional workflows into mobile imaging. “ARRI has defined the visual language of cinema for generations. Through this collaboration, we are bringing those cinematic standards and professional workflows into mobile imaging, enabling creators to craft stories with greater authenticity and emotional depth,” Li said.
ARRI’s Perspective on Consumer Devices
David Bermbach, Managing Director at ARRI, said consumer smartphones have already become a tool in professional filmmaking. “Today, consumer smartphones have already become a serious tool in professional filmmaking, being used on blockbusters across the globe. That’s why we believe it is time to bring these worlds even closer together,” Bermbach said. He added that this marks the first time core elements of ARRI Image Science are being integrated directly into a consumer device.
Dr. Benedikt von Lindeiner, Vice President at ARRI and the executive responsible for the technical collaboration with HONOR, outlined the engineering challenge. “The challenge is not to replicate cinema hardware, but to translate the underlying principles into compact, real-time mobile architectures,” von Lindeiner said. He noted that the goal includes enabling creators to move from mobile capture into professional post-production workflows.
Technical Objectives of the Partnership
The technical work targets three specific imaging qualities: natural color reproduction, gentle highlight roll-off, and a sense of depth consistent with cinematic storytelling. These qualities are described as foundational to ARRI Image Science rather than post-processing effects. The collaboration applies them within the real-time processing constraints of smartphone hardware.
Moreover, the partnership addresses workflow compatibility. Creators using the resulting mobile imaging system should be able to move their footage directly into professional post-production environments without significant conversion steps. This positions the output as compatible with existing cinema production pipelines.
HONOR ROBOT PHONE to Feature ARRI Technology First
The first results of the HONOR ARRI collaboration will debut in the HONOR ROBOT PHONE, scheduled for release later in 2026. No pricing, specific release date, or additional hardware specifications were disclosed in the announcement. The ROBOT PHONE has been referenced in prior HONOR communications as a forthcoming device in the company’s AI-focused product lineup.
Furthermore, ARRI’s involvement in consumer devices represents a departure from its traditional focus on professional production equipment. The company’s product portfolio currently includes digital cameras, lenses, lighting fixtures, and rental services for professional productions. The partnership with HONOR extends that expertise into the mass-market smartphone segment for the first time.
