The Hydrogen Mobility Pilot at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University has successfully concluded its second phase, marking a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s clean energy transition. Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, the authorized distributor of Toyota vehicles in Saudi Arabia since 1955, together with Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota Tsusho Corporation, completed the advanced testing phase from January 26 to 28, 2026, under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy.
The initiative aligns with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University and the Ministry of Energy for implementing hydrogen fuel cell mobility pilot projects. The program’s opening ceremony brought together prominent figures from government, academia, and industry sectors, reinforcing the strategic importance of hydrogen solutions in the Kingdom’s sustainability roadmap.
Expanding Beyond Initial Testing
While the first phase completed in September 2025 focused on feasibility studies and initial testing, the second phase of the Hydrogen Mobility Pilot emphasized scalability, operational expansion, and diversification of hydrogen-powered solutions. The university campus served as a comprehensive testing ground for multiple hydrogen applications, demonstrating the technology’s versatility across different mobility and stationary use cases.
The expanded pilot included Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicles, the Caetano H2.City Gold hydrogen fuel cell bus, a Toyota hydrogen fuel cell forklift, and the GEH2 stationary hydrogen generator. All equipment operates on Toyota’s advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology, providing valuable data on performance, efficiency, and integration potential within Saudi Arabia’s unique environmental conditions.
Strategic Vision for Clean Energy
“The second phase of this hydrogen pilot represents a strategic step forward in advancing hydrogen mobility and stationary solutions in the Kingdom. By expanding the scope of hydrogen-powered transport and stationary applications at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, we are moving beyond exploration toward scalability, gaining practical insights into how this technology can deliver long-term value at scale while supporting Saudi Vision 2030’s sustainability objectives.”
Mazin Ghazi Jameel, Managing Director of Toyota Marketing Operations, Abdul Latif Jameel Motors
The initiative demonstrates a practical approach to carbon neutrality, testing hydrogen technology in real-world environments to accelerate innovation and implementation. This hands-on methodology provides crucial insights for future large-scale deployment across the Kingdom.
International Collaboration and Expertise
“Toyota is proud to work alongside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and our valued partners to advance hydrogen mobility. Through practical pilots such as this, we are strengthening real-world understanding of hydrogen applications engaging students directly and inspiring the next generation to shape the future of clean transport. This reflects Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, grounded in the belief that progress is accelerated when innovation is tested in real environments.”
Nobuyuki Takemura, Chief Representative of the Middle East Regional Office, Toyota Motor Corporation
“This second phase marks an important milestone in translating hydrogen mobility from pilot testing into scalable real-world applications. By expanding beyond passenger vehicles to include buses and stationary solutions, we are gaining valuable insights into how hydrogen can support integrated mobility ecosystems and contribute meaningfully to Saudi Arabia’s clean energy and sustainability ambitions.”
Saud Alsultan, Deputy General Manager of Toyota Tsusho Corporation, Saudi Arabia
Building on Growing Portfolio
This university pilot builds on Abdul Latif Jameel Motors and Toyota’s expanding portfolio of hydrogen initiatives in Saudi Arabia. The collaboration includes the Jeddah hydrogen taxi pilot, Makkah Caetano H2.City Gold bus trials, and a specialized fuel cell research partnership with King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) focused on developing region-specific hydrogen solutions.
The successful completion of both phases reflects the long-term commitment of Abdul Latif Jameel Motors, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation to support Saudi Arabia’s sustainability journey through diversified, market-responsive hydrogen solutions that align with Vision 2030 objectives.
