The Hyundai Boulder Concept made its global debut at the 2026 New York International Auto Show on April 13, offering a design preview of the company’s first body-on-frame vehicle for the U.S. market. The SUV concept signals Hyundai’s entry into the midsize pickup segment with a production truck scheduled for delivery by 2030.
The Boulder Concept features an upright two-box silhouette with Hyundai’s “Art of Steel” design language, emphasizing off-road capability and functional utility. The vehicle incorporates a ladder-frame construction favored by U.S. consumers seeking serious towing and hauling performance. Hyundai confirmed that future body-on-frame vehicles will be designed, developed, and built in America using Hyundai-produced U.S. steel.
Design and Exterior Features
The Boulder Concept’s exterior design reflects its off-road focus through several functional elements. The vehicle sits on oversized 37-inch mud-terrain tires with a tailgate-mounted full-size spare, providing generous ground clearance for challenging terrain. A stout, low-profile roof rack with steel webbing increases cargo capacity, while dual safari-style fixed upper windows enhance visibility and light penetration into the cabin.
Coach-style doors enable enhanced side-loading for both front and rear rows, accommodating equipment and gear. A novel double-hinged rear tailgate opens from either side for flexible loading scenarios. The power drop-down rear window accommodates extra-long objects and enables flow-through ventilation. Reflective materials on tow hooks and door handles improve visibility during low-light conditions. The entire exterior wears a Liquid Titanium finish.

José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, stated that the Boulder Concept demonstrates the company’s commitment to American customers. “Body-on-frame vehicles are the backbone of American work and adventure, and we intend to compete in the midsize pickup segment with everything we have,” Muñoz said. The midsize pickup represents one of 36 new Hyundai vehicles coming to North America by 2030.
Randy Parker, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America, noted that the company sees a clear opportunity in the pickup market. “Body-on-frame trucks play a central role in this market, and we see a clear opportunity to bring customers a new alternative that reflects how they work, explore, and live,” Parker said. The Boulder Concept SUV signals Hyundai’s approach to developing its midsize pickup with U.S. customer needs at the core.
Design Philosophy and Future Direction
SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center, described the Boulder Concept as a response to customer demand. “Our body-on-frame Boulder Concept SUV is a four-wheeled love letter to the dynamic, off-road way of life that many customers have been asking us for in our future-focused research,” Lee said. The design study was led by Hyundai’s Southern California-based Design North America team, with specific focus on attracting off-road enthusiasts to the brand.
The “Art of Steel” design philosophy transforms steel’s strength and flexibility into sculptural yet functional forms. Inspired by advanced steel technologies from Hyundai Steel, the design language emphasizes the material’s powerful, robust, and timeless qualities. The Boulder Concept’s construction and appearance signal Hyundai’s future design direction for body-on-frame vehicles, indicating unlimited potential for rugged capability and utility in upcoming production models.
