Huawei launched its new Intelligent Substation Solution in Cape Town. This event took place on May 20, 2026, during the Southern Africa Electric Power Summit. Notably, the initiative aims to accelerate digital transformation across the regional economy and power sector by introducing automated monitoring systems.
Deploying the Intelligent Substation Solution
The company developed the Intelligent Substation Solution in partnership with the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE). Zhuhai Unitech Power Technology also participated. Consequently, the partners designed this technology to modernize electrical grids across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Operational Efficiency and Cost Reductions
According to an African utility representative, the system integrates intelligent video, artificial intelligence algorithms, and secure wireless networks. As a result, it replaces four major manual processes. These manual processes include monitoring, inspection, meter reading, and analysis across the entire grid.

Furthermore, the representative stated that inspection times decreased from several days to just a few minutes. Meanwhile, operational and maintenance labor costs fell by 70%. Ultimately, the deployment of the Intelligent Substation Solution represents a shift toward automated grid management.
Digital Transformation in Power Grids
Wang Guoyu, vice president of Huawei’s Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit, addressed the summit. He stated that digital technologies are reshaping the entire value chain. Therefore, the company will continue to provide communication technologies to help African utilities transition to digital systems. In addition, these technologies support renewable energy integration.
Collaborative Industry Standards
Industry leaders from Eskom in South Africa, Ghana’s Bui Power Authority, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria attended the summit. These organizations shared their experiences. Consequently, the collaboration highlights the growing demand for unified digital standards across the continent.
Future Outlook for African Energy
Following the summit, participants held a roundtable discussion regarding wireless private networks. Specifically, Gösta Kallner, executive chairman of the 450 MHz Alliance, emphasized the importance of the 450 MHz frequency band. This band ensures reliable grid operations. Meanwhile, representatives from CIGRE agreed that a unified technical framework is crucial for regional telecom and power infrastructure.
