The newly launched Iridium 9604 module aims to simplify the development of hybrid IoT devices. Iridium Communications released this hardware alongside an associated development kit on June 25, 2026. Consequently, device manufacturers can now prototype and validate dual-connectivity products more efficiently.
Technical Specifications
This hardware combines Short Burst Data satellite connectivity with LTE-M mobile networks. Additionally, it integrates Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology for precise positioning. Manufacturers can use the accompanying development kit to test these space and terrestrial options.
The physical dimensions of the hardware measure exactly 16mm by 26mm by 2.4mm. This compact size allows developers to integrate the component into small form-factor devices without sacrificing performance. Moreover, the system maintains compatibility with multiple global navigation services. These services include GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou GNSS networks.
Connectivity and Network Capabilities
Satellite communications are routed through the company’s network of low Earth orbit satellites. These satellites operate specifically within the L-band frequency range between 1GHz and 2GHz. As a result, the signals can penetrate most weather conditions to maintain stable telecommunications connections. This frequency band is known for its reliability in challenging environments where terrestrial signals fail.
“Integrating the satellite, mobile and GNSS elements into a single module would simplify device design, reduce costs and create smarter, location-aware products.”
Tim Last, Executive Vice President at Iridium
Tim Last stated that integrating these three elements reduces overall hardware costs. Specifically, he noted that the design helps create location-aware products with a range beyond traditional land-based networks. Furthermore, he described the release as a significant step for global connectivity.
Applications of the Iridium 9604 module
The Iridium 9604 module is designed for deployment in highly remote environments. These areas include open oceans, isolated land masses, aviation airways, and polar regions. Meanwhile, developers can customize the subsystems of all three connectivity elements to manage failure detection.
Device makers can also configure connectivity choices based on the physical location of the device. In addition, they can route data traffic depending on the specific service being run. For example, a device can switch to satellite mode when cellular signals drop below a certain threshold. This level of control allows for highly customized operational profiles.
Future Outlook
As industries expand their remote operations, hybrid connectivity solutions are becoming increasingly important. The integration of satellite and cellular networks helps bridge the gap in areas lacking terrestrial infrastructure. Consequently, the Iridium 9604 module provides a standardized platform for future industrial IoT deployments.
