UK telecommunications operator Virgin Media O2 has expanded its O2 Satellite service to iPhone users starting May 28, 2026.
This expansion widens access to the direct-to-device connectivity option that the company introduced earlier this year. Notably, this deployment targets users in rural, coastal, and remote areas of the United Kingdom where traditional mobile coverage can be limited or completely unavailable. Consequently, this helps users maintain communication in areas previously considered dead zones.
Compatible iPhone Models and Pricing
The satellite feature is compatible with several Apple mobile devices, specifically the iPhone 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 ranges, as well as the iPhone Air. Customers on most contracts can access the service as a £3 monthly add-on. However, subscribers on the Ultimate Plan receive the service at no additional cost.
Supported Applications and Use Cases
The connection supports messaging and data transmission across multiple applications. Specifically, users can access Messages, Apple Maps, WhatsApp, Messenger, X, and various location services. Furthermore, the company stated that satellite connectivity can improve network resilience during outages or natural disasters.

The expansion of the O2 Satellite service represents a shift in how mobile operators address coverage gaps. Chris Bournes, commercial director at Virgin Media O2, said expanding the service to iPhone users is a step in making this technology accessible to more customers.
Infrastructure and Network Coverage
Virgin Media O2 originally launched the O2 Satellite service in February 2026. The operator utilizes Starlink infrastructure to deliver the direct-to-device mobile data service, which was the first of its kind to go live in Europe. Consequently, the technology has increased the operator’s UK landmass coverage to 95%.
As satellite-to-phone technology matures, more operators are expected to integrate satellite capabilities into standard mobile plans. Furthermore, the development of direct-to-device services highlights a growing trend in the global telecommunications sector. Industry analysts expect other regional providers to follow similar strategies to enhance their network reliability.
