Johnson Controls has launched a Balanced Cooling solution, a smart cooling solution designed to address low Delta T performance in buildings connected to centralized cooling systems across the UAE. Delta T refers to the temperature difference between chilled water entering and leaving a building’s cooling system. When this difference falls below intended levels, the system cannot transfer heat efficiently, requiring more water circulation to deliver the same cooling output.

According to the company, the Balanced Cooling solution combines smart valve retrofits, real-time monitoring, artificial intelligence diagnostics, and intelligent control to identify and correct Delta T inefficiencies. Initial customer testing showed the solution eliminates related surcharges by up to 100%, reduces pumping energy by up to 40%, and significantly lowers comfort complaints in continuously operating facilities.

Tarek Hassan, associate director of Sustainability at Johnson Controls for the Middle East and Africa region, said the solution was developed to move beyond isolated fixes. “Balanced Cooling was developed to move beyond isolated fixes by combining system visibility, intelligent diagnostics and targeted corrective action in one integrated solution,” Hassan stated. “The result is a more effective way to reduce pumping energy, manage surcharges and improve cooling performance using existing building infrastructure.”

Low Delta T as a Persistent Problem

Low Delta T can occur due to over-pumping, poor hydronic balance, or valve misalignment. This inefficiency exposes building owners to surcharges, affects system balance, and creates occupant discomfort. The problem is particularly relevant in the UAE as the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy identifies district cooling retrofits as a key component of its Efficient Cooling programme, with DEWA expecting district cooling penetration in Dubai to reach 40% by 2030.

Retrofit-Friendly Design and Integration

The Balanced Cooling solution features a retrofit-friendly, plug-and-play design that supports integration with existing HVAC and building management systems. This approach makes it suitable for occupied residential, hospitality, and office buildings where cooling performance must be improved efficiently with minimal operational disruption.

The solution helps building owners move beyond reactive adjustments by providing better system performance visibility and a more targeted path to correction. This supports more stable cooling performance, improved system balance, and more efficient operation over time.
