A team of engineering students from King Abdulaziz University (KAU) secured seventh place at the MATE ROV underwater robotics championship in Canada. The team finished seventh among 35 international university teams, marking the first time a Gulf university team has reached this stage of the competition.
Supported by Johnson Controls Arabia (JCA), the students designed and built an advanced remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) and its control system. The project required extensive testing of the vehicle’s propulsion and navigation systems to ensure reliable performance under challenging conditions.
Saudi Success in Underwater Robotics
The MATE ROV competition challenges students to build robots that address real-world marine engineering and ocean exploration issues. By participating in this global underwater robotics championship, the Saudi team demonstrated their technical skills on an international platform.
Two Years of Engineering Preparation
The milestone follows two years of preparation, during which the students refined their ROV design and control systems. Furthermore, the team overcame various technical challenges to secure their position among leading global universities. The students focused on enhancing the durability of the vehicle under high-pressure conditions.
