Meta is evaluating data center robots to automate physical maintenance tasks such as cable swapping and server power cycling across its server facilities. The initiative aims to support the company’s expanding digital footprint while managing labor demands, according to Wired.
Deploying Data Center Robots for Hardware Maintenance
Engineers are testing robotic systems from multiple suppliers, including Kinova, ABB, and Watney Robotics. Specifically, Meta is assessing a Kinova Gen3 robotic arm to cut electrical power and cycle servers during outages. Furthermore, the company has deployed a specialized robot designed to disconnect and reconnect networking cables automatically, reducing manual interventions by technical teams.
In several facilities, Meta also implemented a simple robotic device resembling a mechanical finger. This tool physically presses power buttons on devices like the Mac Mini when prompted remotely by engineers. These developments integrate with broader investments in artificial intelligence hardware across the technology sector.
Robotic Hardware and Vendor Collaborations
Historically, delicate data center components presented mechanical challenges for automation. Earlier industrial trials occasionally damaged server hardware during routine tasks. However, recent advances in computer vision models and reduced hardware costs have made precision handling viable for operational environments.

Workforce Impact and Operational Shift
The automation drive has prompted discussions regarding long-term staffing requirements in regional technical hubs. Some technicians estimate that automated cable swapping could eventually handle up to 80 percent of specific routine workloads. Consequently, local communities are monitoring how infrastructure shifts affect employment guarantees.
In response, Meta emphasized that its infrastructure operations require technical personnel. Meta spokesperson Francis Brennan stated that the company continues to invest in workforce training programs covering electrical, mechanical, and plumbing skills across several US states, addressing general skilled labor shortages.

Other technology companies are pursuing similar automation initiatives. Microsoft and Google previously detailed investments in robotics for server operations, while Amazon introduced systems to assist with component recycling.
