The new Nokia AI-RAN platform has been introduced to improve spectral efficiency in telecommunications networks through integration with Nvidia systems. Nokia stated that this technology will address growing capacity demands for global operators. Consequently, the system aims to optimize existing infrastructure investments.
According to the company, the platform currently improves spectral efficiency by 20 percent. Furthermore, Nokia expects to deliver efficiency gains of 50 percent in 2027 and 100 percent in 2028. The company plans to start pilot deployments by the end of 2026, followed by full commercial availability in 2027.
Spectral Efficiency Projections
The platform utilizes the anyRAN software from Nokia, which allows operators to use the system alongside equipment from other network vendors. However, the majority of services powered by Nvidia systems are restricted to operators already using the AirScale product range. Meanwhile, a graphics processing unit (GPU) based AirScale capacity plug-in is offered as an upgrade path.
This plug-in integrates Nvidia computing capabilities into active networks to protect previous hardware investments. In addition, operators have the option to use processors from Marvell Technology within this setup.
Technical Architecture of Nokia AI-RAN
The standalone node within the Nokia AI-RAN architecture uses graphics processing units to operate across both 4G and 5G networks. Additionally, the hardware is designed with forward compatibility for future 6G infrastructure. Operators can deploy this technology in multiple configurations, including single-node setups, clusters, or as part of a single logical base station.
To mitigate potential supply chain challenges, Nokia partners will offer commercial off-the-shelf servers built around these GPUs. This hardware strategy ensures that operators can acquire necessary components from multiple sources.
Hardware Integration and Partnerships
Nokia president and CEO Justin Hotard stated that the Nokia AI-RAN system makes the network intelligent. He added that the technology helps operators maximize the capabilities of their current infrastructure.
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, stated that the collaboration turns the radio access network into a large-scale artificial intelligence computer. This development represents a shift in how telecommunications infrastructure operates.
Subscription Model and Industry Outlook
In a shift in business strategy, Nokia introduced a subscription-based model for software upgrades. This model allows operators to access new software features without the need to replace physical hardware. Notably, this approach matches recent strategies deployed by competitors like Ericsson.
As a result, operators can manage capital expenditure more effectively while adopting the Nokia AI-RAN platform. This transition to software-defined telecom infrastructure is expected to accelerate over the next decade.
