China 6G trials have been approved by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) for field testing of 6GHz spectrum in designated regions across the country. The move represents a significant step in China’s telecommunications infrastructure development and follows the country’s 2023 allocation of 6GHz for 5G and 6G services.

IMT-2030 (6G), the government’s main coordinator for 6G development, authorized the trials to advance technical research, testing, and validation. MIIT stated the trials will be based on key scenarios and performance indicators defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for 6G.

Accelerating China’s 6G Research and Development

According to MIIT, the trials are intended to accelerate China’s efforts in 6G research and development, standardization, and industrialization. The country first allocated 6GHz for 5G and 6G services in 2023, marking a world first at that time, though it delayed approving trials until now.

The 6GHz band, classified as mid-band spectrum, offers particular advantages for several artificial intelligence and telecommunications use cases identified by the ITU for 6G networks. These include mass AI deployment, holographic communications, and autonomous transport applications.

Global Spectrum Allocation Differs Significantly

The regulatory approach to 6GHz spectrum allocation varies substantially across regions. The United States opened the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi use in 2020, while Europe continues to debate how to allocate the frequency. European telecommunications operators have urged regulators to make the entire upper 6GHz band available for mobile services, arguing the move is necessary to prevent the region from falling behind in 6G development.

This position contrasts with interests in the Wi-Fi industry, which is also seeking access to 6GHz spectrum. The divergence in regulatory approaches reflects ongoing global tension over spectrum allocation as nations prepare for next-generation telecommunications networks.

Technical Implications for 6G Deployment

The 6GHz band’s mid-band classification makes it suitable for delivering the performance characteristics required by emerging 6G applications. Mass deployment of AI systems, real-time holographic communications, and autonomous vehicle networks all depend on the bandwidth, latency, and coverage characteristics that 6GHz spectrum can provide. China’s trials will generate data on how effectively the spectrum performs in these scenarios.
